ARTIST OF THE MONTH: A ONE-MAN SHOW
"Central Park Trees," a 2004 photograph, is part of a retrospective of Mike's career in digital photography, one of 18 pictures on display at the Pine Shores Art Association, 94 Stafford Ave., Manahawkin, NJ. For more details, please scroll down.
WE HAVE A WINNER HERE....
Mike's latest acrylic, "September Light," won a Merit Award at the annual Pine Shores Art Association Art Harvest Show, which runs through November and Decembe at the PSAA Gallery, 94 Stafford Ave., Manahawkin. Here's what one of the show's two judges, Suzanne Pilgram, had to say about the painting: "It’s the energy that attracted us. We just love in particular the sky. We felt he did well: the energy, the contrast, the depth in the sky. We just feel that this perhaps could have been one of the pieces that might even have been best in show--but you wouldn’t want to tell the other person. [laughter] Because it’s so different from the best in show. But the only thing we felt was that it was a little bit weak on the bottom, that it didn’t quite come together as a composition, but it just needs a little bit more work, and then voila, I think it would be really wonderful. And then perhaps go back into some similar contrasts, see, there’s a lot happening there, and it plays off this area. But maybe a little bit too much down here. And if there’s a little bit more contrast, then it would be more unified. It’s the only negative that we found; otherwise there’s just so much energy there, and it’s a delightful piece. There’s a fluidity, there’s a looseness, which is so different from photography. So this is fabulous. Yeah, I think he’s on to something. You know, maybe, if he’s going to have all these verticals going out horizontally, there could be more maybe contrast in between them? But he is practically there. I would say he just needs to work a little bit more on this. But not so much that he is going to destroy [what he’s done by overworking it]".
